Why is the clock on my computer not exactly the same as the regular time?
I bought a new motherboard which is Asus Rampage III Extreme Edition. I'm using Windows XP Pro 64. It's 9:39pm. I set it to 9:39pm. on my computer too. However, about a week later, it should 9:39pm. as the actual time and 9:35pm. on my computer. I have to keep adjust time.
What went wrong and how do I fix this problem? I never experience this problem with other motherboard or computers before.
Computer clocks, like every other clock out there, has minor clock skew. Over time, the skew grows and grows, and it eventually gets off by a few minutes. Every clock does this; it's really not avoidable.
However, many times you don't notice it because many electronic devices have auto-sync. For instance, almost all cell phones will automatically resync to the correct time every X interval (say, every week). When you board a plane and get off at a different time zone, the cell phone's clock resyncs to that particular time zone. Therefore, despite the clock skew, you never notice it because they auto-correct by contacting a base station.
Similarly, Windows automatically resyncs the time every week. You can adjust this setting by double-clicking the clock, and clicking "change date and time settings".
