Any difference between SD cards for HiFi audio and for cameras?
I 've got several SD cards I use for photography.
I've just bought a small audio system that records onto and plays from SD cards.
Is there any difference in the type of cards - audio v photo and also from a quality perspective.
I notice some have got names such as
4Gb SDHC
High Speed x66
Hi Speed x80
Ultra II Plus
Ultra III Extreme
Class 4
etc etc etc
I understand Gigabyte capacity. What other characteristics do these cards have that I should be considering??
Firstly the "HC" on SDHC stands for "high capacity". Up until recently, only up to 2gb capacity were viable to make. SDHC cards also have higher transfer rates than SD cards.
The hi and high speed cards are just saying that they have a high transfer rate, making it quicker to move files to and from them.
The Ultra Plus and Extreme cards are just a produt name. As companies develop new techniques, they can make their cards with higher transer rates and capacities, etc. Again, this is really just a name.
Class 4 memoray cards have a transer rate of 4mb per second. This is the same from class 6 cards- 6mb/sec, etc.
Not all electronic items support SDHC. However, most do. You'll also have to make sure that if you're using a class 4 card, for example, the electronic it's being used is capable of transfering at this speed. However, this is really nothing to worry about.
As far as quality is concerned, there's no rpoblem. SD cards store any file just as well as the next.
How To differentiate Varied SD Card Types
Sometimes buyer get confused seeing so many sd card on the counter. Even get so confused which one to buy for their required devices. On these sd card varied types and usages will like to share my experiences. First of all, will start off with plain old Secure Digital cards. All these sorts of cards range from about 16MB all the way to 2GB. No doubt, there are various brands out there. But Sandisk being the most popular and quite expensive, then comes Kingston, OCZ, PNY, and Transcend. Now the most important fact associated with the sd card is that many companies go by the same rating system, where they use the "x" (times), but nobody knows what it means? And also Sandisk uses a Standard, Ultra II, Extreme III, and even Extreme IV in certain cases of Compact Flash for their ratings. But question is that what this actually means in terms I understand - MB/s. Such things needed to get clarified from both ends that is from the buyer and retailer. Unless not clarified such things related to sd card its quite tough to avail best benefits out of these sd cards.
