Can the DoD Common Access Card (CAC) be used from a home, personal computer?
My brother asked me to configure a computer for him. He's in the Army Reserves and is not all that computer savvy, but believes he needs to use the DoD Common Access Card if he is going to access Email and other DoD resources from his home PC. I am not at all familiar with the CAC and how it is being used today. Can someone familiar withthe Army's implementation comment on whether getting a CAC reader for his personal home computer is worthwhile right now and if so, recommend some CAC reader vendors/models?
My dad works for Picatinny Arsenal here in NJ and too my knowledge, if there is webmail for the army reserve then no CAC card is needed. If he wanted to use an email client (Outlook) then you will need more than a CAC card. You will need VPN access to the reserve's servers and then the computer will have to be configured to login to said network and so on and so forth. You may be better off having your brother contact the reserve's IT department. Though if he can survive with webmail then i recommend sticking with it. The army (or at least Pica) cripples Windows beyond belief. They force you to have a background that says "UNCLASSIFIED" on it .
Hope i Helped
