You generally dont need to format memory cards before putting them in mobile handsets so in my experience that shouldn't be the problem. Is the memory card to big for the handset. I think they can take a maximum of 2GB so if you're using bigger it may not work properly. Maybe try cleaning the contacts with an eraser (like you used to use at school) sometimes this can help. If not then the memory card might be faulty. Speak to wherever you got it from and ask to return it and get a replacement. I've had some in the past where I packed the card with music for when I went away travelling with about 500+ tunes but only about 50-100 would actually work! I tried a different card and it worked fine
If you do need to format the card then you can do that when you plug it into your laptop. Go into the cards properties then there should be an option to format, you will lose all data on it though
