Pen Drives Are Getting Smarter
Pen Drives are great for transferring important files, presentations, photos, music, documents and any other data from one computer to another. External hard disks are also getting smaller and bigger in storage space. So, one may ask, why a pen drive? Pen drives offer less storage and are less expensive for those who do not need huge space that external hard drives offer. Pen drives are generally easy to use with plug-and-play feature enabled. Many software vendors are thinking of distributing their software on pen drives. Many software applications work out of the box from a pen drive. You can even use it boot up your computer. Therefore, pen drives keep their place as an important storage device.
Different manufacturers over the years have named their Pen Drives with many different names causing confusion among consumers. Because of this, the Pen Drive is also called as as Pocket Drive, Thumb Drive, Jump Drive, USB Flash Drive, USB Flash Memory Drive, USB Key Drive, USB Memory Key and USB Memory Stick among many others. We cannot say if these names are either correct or incorrect, one of the names that cause a lot of confusion for buyers is the term "Memory Stick". This is because "Memory Stick" is a Sony trademark and it is a type of memory card used in Sony's electronic devices, therefore it is completely different product, which will not plug directly into your computer or laptop’s USB port!
IBM originally invented Pen Drives in 1988 as an alternative to Floppy Disks that are quite in use in those times but required a disk drive for very limited storage of 1 MB or so. IBM never patented pen drives. IBM assigned the task of manufacturing pen drives to M-Systems, which actually own the patent. In that way, a Pen Drive as a modern day floppy disk. The main difference being that a floppy disk contains moving mechanical parts which can make the data stored on it vulnerable, a Pen Drive is solid state electronic device with no moving parts inside, making it resilient to dust and everyday magnetic fields and so a much safer storage option. In addition, Pen Drives can hold much, much more data than the floppy disk, as we have stated earlier. Today, pen drives with up to 128 GB are in use. This is much larger storage space compared even to a normal CD or DVD. Reading data from or writing data to a pen drive is much faster.
The USB pen drive is very simple to use and you can carry it in your pocket. You can connect them to a computer without any additional hardware. They can withstand temperature variations and can keep data safe for a few years. Therefore, you can use them to backup your important files and data as well. Sharing or transferring documents or files between computers is quite easy with this device. Pen drives are widely available nowadays at any offline or online computer stores. So, get a pen drive if you do not have one. You can find a pen drive very useful for all your storage needs.
